Dawneblade

Dawneblade is a female elf Cleric and Paladin of Dawne. Her true name is Elwyne.

She is over 12,000 years old. Other elves are young beside her.

Role

Dawneblade is not a rescuer in the ordinary sense. She serves beginnings. She cannot force outcomes, erase consequences, or redirect a life once it has begun.

Her burden is restraint.

In Book One

Dawneblade first becomes part of The Young Traveler's story after the Growers cave injury. He is unconscious for days. She heals him because the beginning cannot end there.

Afterward, she joins the party.

Relationship to elves

Elves do not worship Dawne, but they instinctively recognize Dawne's authority. When Dawneblade appears, elves defer without command.

Final scene

At the end of Book One, Dawneblade warns The Young Traveler:

If you do this, there is no going back.

After he becomes Finale, she asks:

Was it worth it?

Finale answers:

No.

This answer is not regret. It is the refusal to call a necessary cost acceptable.
